Usually, I try to be as witty as possible in my opinion pieces, yet I have become mentally taxed over the past few weeks with the plight of schoolwork, so I'll keep this week's message simple. Love thy neighbor and the neighbor next to them.
Last Friday marked the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. As you all know, this great man spearheaded the Civil Rights Movement, amongst other endeavors, with the message of love, peace and liberty for ALL. While this message is still just as relevant today as it was 40 years ago, I thought this would be a good time to remind the student body of these TRUTHS.
As we approach the end of another semester and our lives become more chaotic, especially for those about to graduate, it is easy to become engulfed in our own lives and problems.
While this is a characteristic of mankind, we must try to balance our wants and desires with others' needs to achieve a world in which fellow men and women are not our competition, but rather our "neighbors," people who we must see and interact with on a daily basis.
By using this mindset, its is nearly impossible to see others as "them" and it pushes people toward the mentality of "we." WE are all human, WE all share this earth and WE all must work together to make it a better place, whether it be socially, environmentally or economically.
So as we get closer to enjoying our summer or striving toward graduation and the working world, remember to step outside your own life and love thy neighbor, for thy neighbor is my neighbor and my neighbor is OUR neighbor.
