Prospective Students Audition Via Television

Auditioning for a spot in the UCM band can be a stressful event. Future students have to worry about getting the notes just right and being able to site- read to make a good impression. Now, UCM has added another factor into the equation: a television.
Zach Fischer is a senior at St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Mo. Fischer lives about five hours from the UCM campus, where he plans to attend. Recently, he tried out for a scholarship to play with UCM's marching band, via televison. Fischer is the first student to audition through the University's new teleconference auditions.
Michael Sekelsky is the assistant director of bands at UCM and explained that this technology can help the University, as well as students who live far away.
This way we can cut time and save people like Zach from driving 10 hours for a 15 minute audition," Sekelsky said.
Fischer auditioned in front of Scott Lubaroff, director of bands at UCM and David Stagg, assistant director of bands. Fischer came in crystal clear and played a prepared piece on his trombone and was then faxed a new piece of music to play.
Lubaroff explained that UCM is leading the pack in technology.
"This is great. I haven't heard of any other universities using this type of audition," Lubaroff said.
Sekelsky explained that things like this teleconference audition are just one of the many ways that the University is trying to, "think in terms of innovation."
"I would like to be in the marching band, ever since my brother came up there I have really liked the campus," Fischer said.
Sekelsky said he hopes these type of auditions will become more accessible for students who do live far away.
