Faculty Senate May Have Changes

A possible new addition to the Faculty Senate bylaws could mean department chairs and deans may not be allowed to serve on the Senate. Jack Rogers, Faculty Senate president, said they will elect new officers for next year and discuss a bylaw conflict at the April 16 meeting.
"We only have two officers, a president and a vice president," Rogers said. "The parliamentarian will be chosen by the president, and the office professional will remain the same."
The Senate will also vote over a new addition to the bylaws. Rogers said that last year a motion was passed that would prohibit any faculty member who has responsibility over another faculty member to serve on the Faculty Senate. This would mean department chairs and deans, for example, would not be allowed to serve.
"You don't want to put a young faculty member in that kind of situation," Rogers said, adding that having their supervisor next to them might keep a faculty member from saying what they want to say.
This motion, however, caused a conflict. Inadvertently, the motion also prohibited department chairs and deans from serving on Faculty Senate committees.
"Department chairs can be very helpful to have on a committee," Rogers said.
Thus, at the upcoming meeting, there will be a vote to allow department chairs, deans and other faculty to serve on any of the approximately 15 Faculty Senate Committees, without being a member of the Senate.
At its April 2 meeting the Senate discussed many issues; among them were the grade point average policy, the repeat policy, a course evaluation and a raise for faculty. Wendy Geiger, associate professor of communication and Faculty Senate senator, said there were a few topics discussed and some actions taken.
"We revised the current UCM grade point average policy," Geiger said.
Geiger said the motion called for four GPA divisions, rather than the current 10 divisions. The new divisions are cumulative work GPA, major GPA, minor GPA and cumulative work with transfer credits GPA. The motion was passed 24-0 with 2 abstentions. Geiger said this won't affect students; it was just a better way to list the GPA's.
