Many people pass the white house on Maguire, East of the UCM campus. They may see the sign in the yard which lists its Web site, but few actually know what the house is.
The Christian Campus House (CCH), located at 211 S. Maguire, is an interdenominational parachurch with 80 to 100 participants of events, activities and informal worship services.
It is also the residential home to several students who follow similar regulations to that of campus residential halls. In fact, CCH housing is already full for next school year.
Religion is not the only purpose of the organization, however.
"We're not going to shove the Bible down your throat, which I think is what a lot of people might think," said Loren Proffitt, maintence director.
William Ruck, part-time international student minister, said he agreed and explained the purpose of the organization.
"The staff has been trying to come up with a mission statement, but one of the things we try to do is allow for a place of community among students," he said.
The group extends friendship to students without pressuring them religiously, Proffitt said.
"Having people around you to share your everyday problems and struggles is helpful," Ruck agreed.
CCH has a worship and teaching session every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. called "Dig. The sessions focus on various topics year to year.
"This last school year, we've been going through the book of Luke," Ruck said.
The sessions also include intern-led activities and small group discussions.
International student activities
CCH has a ministry that hosts a variety of events for international students.
One of their routine events is an international student lunch on Sunday afternoons, which generally feeds 20-25 students. However, Ruck recalled an instance in which they had about 40 students attend.
"It was crazy," he said. "We didn't have that much food prepared, so we didn't know what to do."
