The men's track team split last weekend as the distances squad went to the Mizzou Relays Friday night and the rest of the team competed at the Truman State Open Saturday.

Freshmen Kevin Denny and Kyle McClure finished second and third, respectively, in their first steeplechase at the Mizzou Relays. Denny finished the 3000-meter race in 9.50.5, while McClure ran a 9.52.41.

"My first steeple race went really good," Denny said. "The water jumps were fun, and not as intimidating as they look."

"The steeplers have been working on technique a lot at practice, so it was nice for them to get to do a meet," said Kirk Pederson, co-head track coach. "This race was good for their confidences."

Another stand out competitor for the Mules was Dennis Hill. Hill finished the 5000-meter run in 16th place. He finished the race with a personal best with a time of 15.13.32.

Junior Damond Berry finished first in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash to lead the Mules, who had five first-place finishers. Berry won the 100-meter in a time of 10.3 seconds. He ran the 200-meter dash in 21.4 seconds.

"I felt I ran pretty good," Berry said. "I felt good, but I can run faster."

Central Missouri took the top three places in the long jump with junior Eric Moore winning the event with a jump of 23-feet-one-inch. Sophomore Dennis Hopgood was second for the Mules' with a jump of 22 feet, 1 inch and freshman Markel Wiley jumped 22-feet-and-one-inch to take third.

The Mules' also went one, two in the triple jump. Hopgood jumped 44 feet, 3 inches to take first, while Anthony Robinson took second with a jump of 43 feet, 5 inches.

The men's 4x400 team of Dannon Abney, Britt Johnson, Seth Mason and Kyle Brown took first for the Mules. The team ran the four-lap race easily in a time of 3.22.75.

"There wasn't much competition in this race for us," Brown said.

The Mules' had second place finishers in three of the four throw events. Junior Brett Cavanah took second in both the discus and shot put. He threw 150 feet, 4 inches in the discus and 47 feet, 5 inces in the shot put. Junior Cale Johnson threw 157 feet, 6 inches in the hammer throw.

Overall, Brown thought the team's performance was nice, but he also knows they have to get better.

"This was a good first meet for us as a team," Brown said. "We had a good start but we need to keep making progress."
