Though approximately 13 million viewers tune in to 'American Idol' on a weekly basis, the Union Ballroom was anything but crowded during Wednesday night's watch party. As a few stragglers trickled in, however, the energy in the room began to pick up.

A crowd made up of devoted fans, casual viewers and students simply seeking free food and prizes watched intently as each contestant performed a Dolly Parton song of their choice. Although there was support for many of the contestants, the crowd's main focus was on UCM graduate David Cook.

"I really do think David Cook is the best one of the group this year," said Jennifer Duncan, senior public relations major. "Not only because he's from around here. He really is the best."

"I liked him from the very beginning, even before I knew he was from Blue Springs," said Kirsten Crawford, freshman special education major. "I think he has a really good chance."

Even though the majority of students were there to support Cook, others had things to say about different contestants.

"David Archuleta is probably going to get a Disney contract. He looks like he could be on the Disney Channel," said Maury Wiles, senior communication major.

"I really think Carly Smithson and David Cook have the best chances of winning," said Bobbi Broils, junior psychology major.

In addition to watching the prospective "Idols" perform, Cary Judd, a musician who performs at many different universities around the United States, played guitar, drums and various other instruments in his one-man show on commercial breaks and after "American Idol."

Though Simon Cowell wasn't as keen on Cook's performance Wednesday night as he usually is, Cook will move on to the Final eight show Tuesday night as UCM students, friends and family continue to show support for the UCM graduate.
