With an 8-1 team record and ranked fifth in the latest national poll, the Jennies were impressed with their performance at the tournament.
"Our goal was to finish within the top three of this tournament," said Jennies' coach Ron Holmes. "This is the biggest tournament all year, and to finish at the top is a great achievement. We didn't even know they were splitting up the teams into divisions until the final day on Sunday."
The invitational was played in baker format, which means all the players have to contribute to the team's score and play the same amount.
Holmes said Sunday was the best performance the team had all season.
"They really kept up with the changes occurring around them and played with what they had, like shooting spares," Holmes said. "It's good to be playing at this level at the end of the season. We can keep up with other teams playing at this level."
Holmes said the upperclassmen who do not normally get all the statistics have really stepped up. Sam Swanson, a senior set-up bowler, led the team at the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Swanson finished the tournament fourth overall with an average score of 204. Alyssa Surges, a red-shirt junior, also bowled well by finishing sixth in the D-II division. Although other teammates were able to perform well, the usually strong Bryanna Caldwell did not have her best performance of the year.
"This was probably Caldwell's worst performance of her career, but the team was able to pick her up and play well," Holmes said.
The Jennies next tournament will be the Alabama A&M Holiday Classic in Bessemer, Ala., March 1 and 2.
Holmes said the team is fine-tuning things and individually, players are working with last-minute adjustments to help them play better as the season goes down the stretch.
"We are not sure how many teams will be in the tournament, but we hope to put together another good showing," Holmes said. "A finish in the top three would be another big building block for us."
