Our View: A Little Too Fashion-Forward
Issue date: 2/28/08 Section: Opinion
As much as we appreciate being able to reward entertainers at the Oscars, we are disappointed about the amount of energy spent bashing people for what they wear.
While fashion is a livelihood for many, we believe too many people spend too much time picking apart details of what people are wearing to award shows.
Who cares if Cameron Diaz wore a pony-tail? She looks beautiful no matter how she wears her hair. Who cares if someone doesn't wear a designer outfit? Maybe they don't want to advertise for any designers.
However, we do agree some people could try harder. Frankly, it's respectful to show that you care when you are invited to a prestigious event. Things such as taking a shower and brushing your teeth are non-negotiable when it comes to presenting yourself to the public.
But we are talking about bigger things. We are talking about the length of ones earings and the color of ones tie. Could we please stop being rude to people who are just trying to look presentable? At least they dressed up. At least they wore something other than jeans.
In a society where casual dress seems to be permeating every formal event in existence, why can't we appreciate why entertainers are being rewarded, instead of being hypercritical about what they are wearing?
