With a five-game winning streak on the line, the Jennies traveled to Emporia State Saturday to battle the Lady Hornets. A victory would have given the Jennies a 12-11 record, 7-7 in the MIAA and an upset over a top conference opponent.

The Lady Hornets feature 6-foot-2-inch senior forward Michelle Stueve. She is currently the MIAA's leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, grabs 8.3 rebounds and leads the league in 3-pointers made and 3-point percentage. She is also a two-time All-American.

With that in mind, the Jennies went on the road and gave the Lady Hornets all they had. It was a game the Jennies seemingly had no chance in. When it was all said and done, the scoreboard showed an 83-65 win for Emporia.

"We all knew we were going to have to play at a high level to beat them there," Slifer said. "Unfortunately we had a lot of breakdowns, and Emporia is good enough to take advantage of every one of them."

In the first half, the Jennies fell behind by as many as 16 points, and at halftime, the Jennies found themselves in a 12-point hole.

"We just got out-rebounded," Slifer said. "They crushed us on the boards. They didn't give us a whole lot of opportunities for defensive rebounds, and they got a lot of offensive rebounds."

Another reason the Jennies fell behind was due to not finding an offensive rhythm. The Jennies shot only 32 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.

"Emporia puts a lot of pressure on you, and you have to be pretty strong to handle it," Slifer said. "Unfortunately, I thought our screening was poor, and our spacing was bad, but they are all things that could be corrected."

The Jennies tried to make the corrections, but it was too little too late.

In the second half, the Jennies allowed the Lady Hornets' lead to build up to 20 points around the seven-minute mark, but refused to leave White Auditorium without a fight. After Emporia's 15-5 run that gave them the edge, the Jennies went on a 14-3 run to get them within nine points.
