Preparing for the future is often the reason students attend a university. Choices are often hard to make when planning the rest of one's life, but sometimes opportunities can be found right here at UCM.

The Spring Career Expo at the Multipurpose building offered many opportunities to students Feb. 6. More than 150 employers waited to collect student's resumes and hear their stories. An estimated 800 students attended the expo.

Teresa Alwell, coordinator for the event, explained that even though the weather was bad, there was a great turn out.

"It's very important, and this is the largest spring expo we have had, with 153 employers," Alwell said.

Students dressed in suits and ties paced the aisles. Amy Strubberg, senior business management major, said she was excited to be a part of the event.

"I hope to get an internship out of this expo, and I just want to get my name out there to employers," Strubberg said.

Strubberg dreamed of being a teacher when she was growing up, but she now has a major in business management.

"I want to be a manager of a financial accounting agency," Strubberg said.

Strubberg is not the only student still dreaming of that perfect career. Steven Mannering, sophomore safety management major, went to the career expo for a class assignment but realized it could offer him more than a grade.

"I also want to get my name out there," Mannering said. "I run a construction company, and I am looking for a steadier paycheck."

Students and visiting employers were excited about the event. Kelli Mobley, a representative for Americo Life, a life insurance company, said she was surprised by the great turn out.

"I was not expecting this many people," Mobley said.

Offering advice to students, she said knowing how to work a career expo is important.

"Do some research about the company, such as size and location. We have hired some graduates from UCM and they seem to ask the right questions," Mobley said.
