For some people, it's not a football game without nachos and beer. At UCM, alcohol is not permitted, so spectators of athletic events have to wash down their spicy nachos with water or soft drinks.

However, this could change. The Student Government Association (SGA) passed a resolution Jan. 29 that would permit alcohol sales to eligible attendees at Mules and Jennies home games.

The resolution was sent to the Alcohol Review Board and proper administration, where it must be accepted before being implementing.

"This would increase game revenue and provide an atmosphere that is more conducive to a major-league type of environment," said Brad Wright, SGA floor leader.

Wright had the idea for the resolution after several students approached him about it. Then he discussed the idea with other SGA members.

"I took it to my constituents at a retreat, and I heard nothing but positive comments," he said.

After the feedback, he pursued the idea further, by collecting statistics from other universities. He found that a few universities, such as Tulane, Syracuse University, University of Southern California and the University of Miami, have similar policies at athletic events.

He spoke to other people from the Alcohol Review Board at UCM and the United Student Housing Association [USHA] and University administration about the issue. During his research, Wright was also informed by Jerry Hughes, athletic director, that Sodexho currently has a liquor license.

When Wright presented the resolution to the senate, Rich Morrell, vice president for student affairs, offered several remarks.

"The comment that I made to the [SGA] was that the Warrensburg Area Partners in Prevention (WAPIP) stated goal is to promote responsible drinking and as long as the intentions [of the legislation] are in-line with [WAPIP's], it could be a positive resolution," Morrell said.

According to the SGA minutes, Morrell also mentioned the resolution would give students an opportunity to demonstrate to the University and the community they can "behave responsibly with alcohol."

As someone who does drink I WOULD NOT support this policy!

I hope people look at what UCM is instead of what it isn't. Right now it is a family atmosphere and compared to other schools attendance is quite good. (Continued…)

It seems to me two questions should be asked. How will this benefit the University? How will this enhance the student experience?

The answer to the former is, perhaps there would be a minor financial gain, but unlikely enough to justify the inevitable problems and grief inherent to alcoholic cumsumption. (Continued…)

I would hardly deem myself to be an alcohol abstainer (except throughout the Lenten season). However, in the confines of a week or even a day, I have NO PROBLEM with abstention. (Continued…)

First, I agree with the majority of what has been stated, especially Molly's post. What really kills me about this whole thing was the examples that SGA used to justify such sales are in no way in comparison to UCM. (Continued…)

Well the desire of the SGA was to say that since the goal is to one day do become a Division 1-AA school therefore they need to start becoming like that. (Continued…)

if the school need to make some more money without raising fees on classes and tuition again, then charging students to even GET INTO THE GAMES would be a start. (Continued…)

What difference does it make? If they want to sell beer, that's fine with me. The only people drinking will be those trying to escape being stuck there at the game. (Continued…)

Devynn,

I hate Division II because nobody cares about it. We could play Division I FCS (formerly I-AA) by simply changing conferences to something like the Missouri Valley Conference. (Continued…)
