Podcasts Could Change Education

Already responsible for a facelift in downloading music files, Podcasting could transform educational settings at Central and other institutions.

Mike Jeffries, UCM director of CentralNet, is working with the Podcast technology to make networks of information available to students, faculty and staff.

Jeffries defined Podcasting as portable on-demand casting.
"The idea behind it is now people can create digital audio and video files," Jeffries said. "Podcasting is just downloads. There is no streaming associated with it."

Jeffries said there are two sides to Podcasting, public and private. He said some areas on the private side include field demonstrations and informative and educational material. Many of these would benefit classroom settings.

"The private side is classes and lectures that faculty want to keep for their students," Jeffries said.

Podcasting gained popularity in 2004. Podcasts in video format are usually referred to as vodcasts.

"Around 2003-04, files started showing up on the Web," Jeffries said. "Some companies, like Sony, began to play with digital audio devices."

Jeffries said this started to formalize standards for MP3 technology.

"Instead of playing compact discs or tapes, you could download files to these devices. The thing that really made it mainstream was Apple's introduction of the iPod," Jeffries said.
Jeffries, along with many others, subscribes to Podcasts. He explained that an RSS, or real simple syndication, is what allows people to subscribe to a Podcast.

Podcasting at Central would change the way lectures and information are disseminated.

"We'll be able to put events at the University on Pod/vodcast format and put them on the Internet," Jeffries said.

Podcasting will help serve Central and educational institutions worldwide. Jeffries said some areas that could benefit from Podcasting would be enrollment management and sporting and musical events.
