The Mules' wrestling team will return home for their next two duals after losing to the No. 10-ranked Tigers of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) this past Saturday in Hays, Kan.
Central will wrestle in Garrison Gym today against the University of Central Oklahoma.
Mules' head wrestling coach Robin Ersland said Central Oklahoma should be the No. 2 team in the nation when the new rankings come out this week. They beat Nebraska-Omaha who was ranked No. 2 this weekend and lost to No. 1-ranked Nebraska-Kearney.
Central Oklahoma was ranked No. 3 this past week but has been ranked No. 1 this season.
"Central Oklahoma is going to be a tough match for us," Ersland said. "We are going to have to be wrestling our best just to stay in the match."
"I have high hopes for us against Central Oklahoma," Keaton Baker said. "They are a great team but if we wrestle well, we will be able to pull off some wins.
"We just can't look at their record and rank. It will be good to see where we stand against a team that good," Baker added
The Mules will then meet SIU-Edwardsville Tuesday night in the Multipurpose Building.
"SIU is a very beatable team," Baker said. "We are all better than what they have to offer, they have a couple of good guys, but all teams do."
Both Central Oklahoma and SIU-Edwardsville are also in UCM's region, so wins in these two matches will help rank the Mules higher in the regional meet Feb. 24, in Ashland, Ohio. These are also the Mules last two matches before regions.
"We are starting to get to our peak," Vince Berucci said. "Then, we just need to stay there through regions.
"We also need to stay healthy."
The Mules' lost to FHSU 22-13. UCM had three wrestlers pick up points for the team.
"Except for a couple of matches, our guys wrestled really well," Ersland said. "We battled and fought. We could have won it as easily as we lost it."
The players felt the same way.
