The United States isn't the only "government of the people, by the people, for the people." The Student Government Association (SGA) also adheres to this motto by addressing the issues important to students, said Mike Carey, SGA president. For the last two-plus years, SGA has been doing just that by working on a bill to build a recreation center for student and alumni use.
The SGA has appointed a student-faculty committee, the Recreation and Wellness Initiative Committee, to oversee the bill. The date of completion is "too early to speculate," because there are multiple steps the committee must take in order to obtain full approval, said Richard Morrell, Vice President of Student Affairs.
However, the committee is planning on finalizing some of the steps soon.
"The committee hopes to have a ground-breaking ceremony for the recreation center this semester," said Patrick Lau, SGA member and student representative for the committee.
The recreation center will be located behind the North Morrow/Garrison Gymnasium. President Aaron Podolefsky gave the committee approval to build the new recreation center in the space the tennis courts occupy, Lau said.
The building alone is estimated to cost $10.58 million, Lau said.
However, there are other expenses for the project that the committee is currently compiling.
The bill must also account for equipment, staffing and utility expenses before it can be presented to the Board of Governors in March, Morrell said.
The presentation will outline the idea and the financing involved, Morrell said.
"The presentation is [the committee's] top priority right now," Lau said. "We will probably have a committee meeting immediately after the Board of Governors meeting to start the project."
The recreation center will be funded by a tuition increase of $3.46 per credit hour.
The committee also plans to implement a 20-year bond to further the financing of the project.
