The wrestling team will compete for the third straight weekend at home, as they host the UCM Dual Jamboree. Teams competing at the Jamboree are Chadron State, Moorhead State, Nebraska-Kearney, Northern State, SIU-Edwardsville, Southwest Minnesota and Truman State.
The Mules are coming off of two very successful weekends. They won duals against Truman State and Indianapolis University Jan. 13. This past weekend the Mules' placed eight wrestlers at the Roger Denker Open.
"This is going to be a tough day for us," Jeremy Hudson said. "There are some really good teams coming. Nebraska-Kearney is the No. 1 team in the nation. They are going to be really tough."
Hudson was the op placer for the Mules at the Roger Denker Open. Hudson took 1st place at the 184-pound weight class. Other place winners for the Mules were Drew Dawson, 2nd at heavyweight; Keaton Baker 3rd at 133, John Ott, 3rd at 197 and Bret Marshall, 5th at 165.
The Mules' also had three unattached wrestlers who placed. Will Forrest placed 4th at 149; Dan McGee took 5th at 187; and Cory Bloodgood placed 6th at 133.
"We wrestled pretty good this weekend," Hudson said. "We had a couple of our started out due to injury but we had some young guys step up and do some really good things."
The Mules' won both of their duals two weekends ago. They beat Truman State University 31-12 and Indianapolis University 19-17.
"We wrestled much better at these two duals than we have before," Ersland said. "I was obviously very happy with the results, but I was even happier with the way we wrestled."
"Beating Indy was also great," Adam Tieben said. "They were ranked 13th in the nation, so that was really great for us."
Mules who got wins against Truman State University were Caleb Dixon, 125; Keaton Baker, 133; Tieben, 157; Vince Bertucci, 165; Jesse Sheets, 147; Jeremy Hudson, 18; and John Ott, 197.
UCM wrestlers who got wins against Indianapolis University were Baker, 133; Tieben, 157; Bertucci, 165; Hudson, 184; and Ott, 197.
"I think everyone wrestled real well," Tieben said. "We improved on some things we haven't been doing real well on, but there is always room for more improvement."
Bertucci and Tieben both said the highlight of the duals was Tieben's win against Indianapolis University's Mike Horton.
The Mules' were down 16-17 going into the last match. He was down 2-4 with 15 seconds left to go when he got a takedown to tie the match. Tieben then scored, a takedown in overtime to win the match and the dual for UCM.
"The dual came down to it," Tieben said. "It was huge for me. As of right now it is in the top five of all matches I have ever wrestled. It was pretty cool. I didn't feel I had a great first match, but the second one definitely made up for it."
"I think we are doing a good job of moving forward right now," Ersland said. "We just need to keep getting a little better every time. We were off a little back in the fall, but we are back on now."
