New Email Addresses Reflect Name

Many students have noticed the small changes that have been happening around campus since CMSU was renamed UCM, but in the next few weeks, a major change will affect all students and faculty.

Chief Information Officer Russ Helm said, by the end of the semester, all student email addresses will be changed to reflect the new name. Instead of "@cmsu2.cmsu.edu," students and faculty will now use "@ucmo.edu. "

"The rules state that when you buy a new domain name, you have to give up the old one," Helm said. "That's why we changed the Web site address and are in the process of changing the email addresses."

"Since 'CMSU' is no longer the name of the school, it makes sense that we have to change the email addresses, too," said Jen Guilford, junior graphic design major.

"Switching is a little inconvenient, but if we end up with something easier to say than '@cmsu2.cmsu.edu,' then it'll be worth it," said Jim Linn, senior electronic engineering major Jim Linn.

Helm is involved with an advisory group, which includes members of the Student Government Association (SGA), members of student affairs and various faculty to discuss how to make the new email system more name-based.

One factor the advisory group is looking into is ideas for students' identification. Possible IDs include the student's first initial followed by their full last name or the student's first and middle initial followed by their last name. For those with similar initials, a number may be added after their last name to differentiate between students.

"I definitely like the shorter domain name and not having to use my social security number in my e-mail address," Guilford said.
"Students came to SGA and said that they didn't like MuleMail or the interface," Helm said. "The new system will look and feel more like the hotmail.com interface. It will offer more storage and be easier to access from the Web."

"I don't use my school email as much as my Yahoo account, but I do check it on a regular basis," Guilford said. "I use my school one to connect with teachers and other students, to check for class closings; mostly school stuff."

"I only use my MuleMail for email," said Linn. "I had an AOL account, but it's easier to just keep track of one email address, so I went with MuleMail. Ninety percent of my emails are class-related, anyway."

"At the moment, we still have the old domain name," Helm said. "We have a period of about six months to stop using it. There are several possibilities for students to begin using the new system. They can leave MuleMail, and we can give the student their new address; they can work in both MuleMail and the new system, or they can have their MuleMail forwarded to their new accounts."

Once the new domain name has been completely changed over, Helm said SGA and University Relations will be active in telling students the best way to change their email addresses.

Students with problems regarding the new addresses should contact Information Services Help Desk at 543-4357, or visit Ward Edwards 0414.
