And the nominees are...
Yes, still hung over from the Golden Globes, Hollywood continues to truck on with the announcement of the Academy Award nominations a few days ago.
There were only a handful of surprises in the nominations; Dreamgirls was snubbed in the best movie category and Paul Giamatti, to my dismay, wasn't nominated for best supporting actor (see "Illusionist" review).
King at Last?
What was surprising, at least in my eyes, was the nomination of Forest Whitaker for best actor.
Now, I haven't seen "Last King of Scotland," and Whitaker could be great in it, but I have seen "Phone Booth," "Light it Up," "Ghost Dog" and a plethora of other films in which Whitaker plays the same terrible character.
I wonder if there was a screen writer toiling over hours of Whitaker films, taking notes on how to create a character that Whitaker could play without having to really act, which seems to be his strong point.
Picture Perfect
The list of nominations for best picture include: "The Departed," "Babel," "Letters from Iwo Jima," "The Queen" and the underdog "Little Miss Sunshine."
A buzz has been building around "Little Miss Sunshine," a character-driven film that follows a family's quest to take their youngest to beauty pageant several hundred miles away. The film has had success in home rental and DVD sales and a win at the Producer's Guild Awards last weekend.
It seems the Academy takes a liking to films like "Sunshine" and could pull off a big upset when awards night roles around.
Lost Innocence
The world of young female role models took yet another hit a few days ago with the announcement of Lindsay Lohan entering into rehab, which seems to be the newest celebrity trend. The reports seem to indicate that Lohan suffers from an eating disorder, which is severely unfortunate for any person, and alcoholic tendencies. What is the most disturbing about this is Lohan is not of legal age to be drinking.
