Student Killed in Weekend Accident

One UCM student died as a result of the weekend's severe ice storm.
Rebekah Lynne Maupin, 19, Clinton, Mo., was driving her 2003 Mini Cooper southbound on Missouri Highway 13, .9 miles south of County Road SE 500 Friday, Jan.12, when she lost control of her vehicle on the icy roadway and slid sideways into the northbound lane. She was struck in the passenger side by 26-year-old Michael J. Derkits, Warrensburg, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pick-up truck.
The accident occurred at 1 p.m. Maupin was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m. by Johnson County coroner C.L. Holdern at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg. Both Maupin and Derkits were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Visitation was held Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton and funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 16 at First Baptist Church in Clinton. Burial was in Elm Spring Cemetery in Kingsville, Mo.
Maupin was born April 20, 1987 in Independence, Mo. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and was a nursing student at UCM. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton.
She is survived by her parents, Dennis and Jennifer Maupin, and one sister, Hannah Maupin, all of the home; a second sister, Melissa Chiles and husband, Jeremy; a niece, Hallie Chiles; her paternal grandmother, Peggy Maupin and fiance, Chance Wilson, all of Clinton; and her maternal grandfather, Norm Arbo, of New Port Richey, Fla.
