SLOW START--Women's basketball head coach Dave Slifer was feeling the heat during a 22-point home loss to Washburn Dec. 30. The Jennies have started the conference season 2-2 and 9-4 overall.

The Jennies' basketball team started off conference play a little disappointed but hope to regain some victories in this upcoming week.

With a 9-4 record overall and a 2-2 record in conference, the Jennies' basketball team fights to compete in the toughest conference in the country.

After a successful trip to Florida during the middle of December, where the Jennies picked up two wins, the team traveled back home to face strong competition.

The Jennies began conference play with victories against Pittsburg State and Southwest Baptist. The team then gained two losses as they struggled against Washburn and Missouri Southern.

On Dec. 30, the Jennies fought against No. 3 ranked Washburn at the Multipurpose Building.

The Jennies came out strong the first half, keeping the Lady Blues' scoring to a minimum, but Washburn dominated the second half making the final score 66-44.

"They overpowered us during the second half because of our small line-up," said head coach Dave Slifer. "Our line-up consists of four guards and one forward, which will hurt us tremendously on rebounding."

One of the Jennies' major weaknesses this season has been lack of height.

"Height definitely affects the game," said junior Lindsey Maple. "We are playing against girls who are a lot taller than us which puts us at a disadvantage."

"Our main focus for the rest of the season is to try to get our line-up bigger so we can compete inside better," Slifer said.
The Jennies handled Southwest Baptist with no problem Jan. 2 in Bolivar, Mo., scoring a season high of 93 points.

"[That] was probably our best game so far this season," Slifer said. "After scoring only 44 points against Washburn, it was nice to comeback and score 93 points. We shot the ball very well."

Senior Ashley Millham led the team with 26 points, while Maple had 21, senior Kim Battle scored 14, and senior Meagan Fromm and junior Stephenie Cook both had 10 each.

The Jennies then traveled to Joplin, Mo., to compete against Missouri Southern.
