Issue date: 1/11/07 Section: News
Just four months after Sigma Nu opened their new three-story, off-campus home, the UCM chapter of the fraternity's charter has been revoked.

Following a complaint, the national organization came to the University in November to investigate.

The national fraternity interviewed several people associated with Central's Kappa Nu chapter of Sigma Nu. The investigation confirmed "violations of the risk reduction policy as well as the fraternity's law specifically related to new member [candidate] education that constituted as hazing, according to the Sigma Nu organization," said Brad Beacham, executive director of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc.

The decision to revoke the charter was made by the fraternity's High Council, Beacham said.

Following the national organization's decision to revoke the charter, the University decided to sever ties, as well, said Rich Morrell, vice president for Student Affairs.

Regarding disciplinary action taken by the University, Morrell said, "We haven't been given any direct information on the violations. [The national organization] would have to share the information with us, and then we would determine, on our own, the validity of the allegations."

Morrell said the University has asked the national organization for the information to conduct their own investigation.

"We deeply regret and are saddened by the loss of the Kappa Nu Chapter at Central Missouri," Beacham said. "However, Sigma Nu fraternity will not tolerate misconduct that defies the fraternity's most basic values and principles."

According to the Sigma Nu Web site, Sigma Nu was actually founded to rebel against the practice of hazing at the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va.

Today, the national fraternity has established a 24-hour hotline for undergraduates and parents to anonymously report suspicions of hazing.

Although the national organization is not sure of a timeline for re-establishing the Kappa Nu chapter, Beacham said they will work with UCM and alumni to plan for the future.
