Homecoming has become a big highlight of the season for the Mules football team every year. The Mules have a tradition of winning on homecoming in past seasons. In the last five years the Mules are 5-0 on homecoming and will try to come out this Saturday with another win.

This Saturday the Mules will face the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist at 1:30p.m. in Walton Stadium-Kennedy Field. The Mules come into the game after a disappointing 30-20 loss to the Griffons of Missouri Western.

Overall the Mules are 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in MIAA conference play. In three victories, the Mules have won in convincing fashion with double digit final score wins. The season could have been different with some different outcomes in the second half of games. In all the Mules three defeats this year, the Mules had the lead in the second half.

"I think we have a good team this year, but we haven't finished games the way we want to," said Willie Fritz, head coach of the football team.

Southwest Baptist this year is 1-5 on the year and is coming off its first win of the season with a 39-21 win over Fort Hays State last week in their homecoming. The Bearcats offense is led by senior quarterback Robert Clardy.

SBU's offense comes into Saturday's game ranked 10th in Division-II passing offense, with an average of 267.2 yards per contest. The Bearcats are also ranked 19th in total offense wiht averaging 401.6 yards per game. SBU's defense is led with junior cornerback Lester Shelton. Shelton was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week last week as he had seven tackles and two interceptions.

"We know that homecoming is a big game," quarterback Toby Korrodi said. "We want to play together as a team and take one play at a time to win this week."

Another event that goes on during homecoming is the reunion of former Mules teams that come back to campus.

This year, members of the 1956 and 1986 football teams will be honored by the University. The 50th and 20th anniversary reunions will bring together the team's former football players, coaches and assistants as well as their friends and families for the homecoming weekend.
