The Mules' and Jennies' cross country team will head to Bolivar, Mo. in two weeks to compete in the MIAA meet after coming off of 4th and 9th place finishes last weekend.
"This meet was nice because we get to see a lot of teams that we will see at the conference meet," Gina Kennion said. "It's kind of a pre-conference meet."
Joe Mundt and Adam Akers led the Mules' to a 4th place finish. Mundt placed 9th by finishing the 8km course in a time of 25:36.87, followed by Akers who placed 12th with a time of 25:42.76.
"Joe Mundt and Adam Akers competed a lot better this meet," head coach Kirk Pedersen said. "I really feel they can be two of the top runners in the conference."
"Adam and I raced better in this meet than we have been in the past," Mundt said.
"We are making good improvement," Pedersen said. "We are still looking for more depth from our 4th and 5th place runners. Our top three runners (Mundt, Akers, Hill) are making good progress towards being All-MIAA runners."
UCM was beat by conference teams Missouri Southern who placed 1st, and 3rd place finisher Southwest Baptist.
"We were pleased with our 4th place finish," Mundt said. "We were close to the rest of the conference teams. This meet will give us a positive attitude about beating those teams at the conference meet."
"This was one of our better races," Pederson said. "We just haven't been able to put a whole team together at one meet yet this year. With all our team runners running strong we are a lot closer to doing that."
The Jennies' placed 9th running without their top runner for the last two meets, Danielle Nagel.
"Danielle Nagel was ill this past week, which causes her to have to sit out this meet," Pederson said.
The Jennies were led by Kennison who ran the 5km race in a time of 18:43.53 to place 17th in the meet. Pedersen said that it was the first time this season last year's MIAA Champion, Kennison, was the top runner for the Jennies. Kennison was behind on training at the beginning of the season because of injury.
"I really thought that we ran flat," Pedersen said. "If we are flat now though we will race good in two weeks (MIAA meet)."
The Jennies were beat by three MIAA schools at this meet, but Pedersen said they will be fine with Nagel returning for conference. Missouri Southern finished 2nd at the meet, followed in 3rd place, Southwest Baptist and 6th place Pittsburg State.
Pedersen said that his women's team is ready to race well at the conference meet in two weeks.
"We are ready to put it on the line in a big meet," Pedersen said.
