Tailgating is one of sports fans' favorite pastimes; a cold drink, some barbecue and a sea of your favorite team's colors. It doesn't get much better than that.
Homecoming is one of UCM's biggest events, filled with fans, football and spirit. No football game would be complete without tailgating.
Although you can tailgate anywhere, Central has a parking lot reserved especially for UCM's biggest fans in lot 67. The Mule Train, an athletic fundraising group, reserves the lot.
If you are a Mule Train member, admission is free. If you are not a Mule Train member, the fee is $5. If you are 21, it is a bring-your-own-beer event.
The tailgating festivities start two hours before the game and end at half-time. To avoid getting in trouble, tailgaters must stay inside the fenced area around the lot.
Jerry Hughes, the director of intercollegiate athletics, said the Mule Train tailgating creates a fan-friendly atmosphere. He said tailgating has, without a doubt, grown in size.
From his traveling to other schools, he knows UCM has a lot more tailgating restrictions.
He hopes Central's tailgating will continue to grow eventually to the point the school will need to reserve even more lots for the fans.
Sgt. Kim Drake, of Public Safety, said while the potential is there for underage drinking and people straying away with open containers, since Public Safety has issued guidelines, the problems are minimal.
Public Safety does have the right to randomly check ID's during tailgating events.
