Turnovers were the key to victory last week as the Mules beat the Fort Hays State Tigers 37-14.

The Mules defense forced five turnovers against the Tigers to get their first MIAA conference win of the season.
UCM will host the 19th ranked Griffons of Missouri Western Saturday.

In last week's game against the Tigers, the offense got off to a fast start.

The Mules scored on their first drive of the game with a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Toby Korrodi to sophomore Brookes Faddis.

The Mules' defense stopped the Tigers first two possessions with forced turnovers.

Junior Justin Brown intercepted the Tigers' Shane Jackson's flea-flicker pass, and sophomore Adrian Singletary recovered a Jackson fumble.

"Our defense played very good; as we were able to win the turnover battle and turn the turnovers into points," said head coach Willie Fritz.

The turnovers gave the Mules good field position as both turnovers came on the Tigers side of the field.

The Mules were able to capitalize on the field position with two field goals from sophomore place kicker Spencer Webb, of 20 and 26 yards to take an early 13-0 lead in the second quarter.
"We were more motivated to have a good start last weekend; as the players and coaches had a competition to see who could boost the team up more," Korrodi said. "I think it really helped us play together as a team."

After the fast start, the Tigers would answer with a 12 play, 80-yard drive that took longer than six minutes.

The Mules continued their fast start by scoring on their first drive of the second half with a 13-yard pass from Korrodi to senior tight end Ted Maxwell.

The fourth quarter started with the Tigers fighting back on a Jackson rush up the middle of the Mules' defense for a 40-yard touchdown to make the score 23-14.

Although the game was still in doubt, the Mules answered quickly with a four-play, 71-yard touchdown drive of their own.
On the drive, Korrodi completed a pass to Maxwell for 47 yards, and the drive was capped on a 28-yard run by senior Will Caldwell.

"The offensive line made two big blocks to make a perfect play where I could run free into the end zone," Caldwell said.
