After a 15th-place finish on the men's side and a 9th-place finish by the Jennies at Oklahoma State's Cowboy Jamboree, UCM's cross country teams will head to Edwardsville, Ill., to compete in the Border Wars on Saturday.
Head coach Kirk Pedersen said this upcoming meet is important to build confidence and take it into the conference meet.
At this next meet, the team will get to see a lot of their conference competition.
"We really just want to go into this meet healthy and come out of it healthy for the conference meet," Pedersen said. "This will be a meet that everyone can learn at."
"The last meet before conference [Border Wars] is a small meet, yet there will be some more teams that are in our conference there," Dennis Hill said. "We are just looking to improve at this meet."
"This meet is important but we really want to be running our best at the conference meet," Gina Kennison said. "It will also be good seeing teams before we run against them at regions, like Abilene Christian."
Last season, the Jennies beat Abilene Christian by only two points to win the South Central Regional meet.
The Mules scored 366 points to place 15th at the last meet. UCM was lead by Adam Akers who placed 52nd with a time of 26:41.
"Adam Akers was our top runner for the first time this year," Pedersen said.
"He started the year with illness and injury. It is good to see him running well again."
Other runners that placed for the Mules' were Hill, 63rd, 26:52, Joe Mundt, 68th, 26:55, Chris Colesworthy, 85th, 27:22, David Fuchs, 98th, 27:45, Anthony Schulz, 118th, 28:35 and Joe Nagel, 120th, 28:42.
"We are putting the pieces together, but we need to keep getting better as a team," Pederson said.
Another standout at this meet was Fuchs. Hill said he ran a 40 second personal best.
"If we had a game ball, we would give it to him," Hill said.
The Jennies placed 9th, scoring 226 points at this meet. Danielle Nagel, who ran the course in a time of 19:05 to take 30th, led UCM.
"Danielle Nagel was again our top runner for the second time this year," Pedersen said. "She is really taking over that spot on our team."
Other placers for the Jennies were Kennison, 38th, 19:20, Sandy Davidson, 41, 19:29, Dani Wagaman, 48th, 19:39, Laura Adams, 69th, 20:22, Alison Kelly, 73rd, 20:38 and Yazmin Vallejo, 74th, 20:59.
