They will square off Saturday with Missouri Southern and Northwest Missouri State Wednesday, as the Jennies look to rebound from a tough road loss at Washburn, 2-1.
Missouri Southern is coming off a 1-0 win at Missouri Western. The game was the third in their five-game road swing. In the other two games, the Lions lost 1-0 to Northwest and played to a tie with Northeastern State. Overall they are 4-3-1 on the season, with a 2-1 conference record.
Missouri Southern is having troubles finding the net in the early going this season. They have only netted seven shots, but allowing only 10. Five of those 10 allowed goals came in a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of #1 Nebraska-Omaha.
The Lions only have one player with more than one goal on the season, forward Erin Whelan. They also aren't producing many opportunities because the team collectively has two assists, both from midfielder Amy Davis.
Northwest Missouri State is having a solid season so far. In their most recent activity, the Bearcats shutout Missouri Southern 1-0. That shutout was the fourth this season.
Northwest has not been led by a particular player statistiscally, but collectively as a team. While the offenseive numbers are not impressive, the key to the Bearcats' success has been the defense. Northwest has only allowed three goals in eight games.
"The two teams that we're going to play this week are very similar, hard-working, possession-oriented teams," said head coach Geoff VanDeusen . "I think we match up well, and our number one focus will be to just take our game to them."
Last week presented a first for the Jennies, losing on the road against a tough Washburn squad, 2-1. The loss dropped the Jennies to 6-1-0, and 1-1 in the MIAA.
"I felt Washburn played better with the conditions than we did," VanDeusen said. "There was a 25-30 mph wind, and with that turf, it's tough to win on the road in this league."
Hazel Cox scored the only goal for the Jennies, and also was the only player to get a shot on goal.
VanDeusen said that despite the loss, the Jennies remain focused.
"They're very motivated," VanDeusen said. "They want to get back on the winning track, so expect to see good efforts from our team this week."
The Jennies have added another honor to the young season, as forward Melanie Hall was honored with the MIAA Player of the Week. The highlight of her week came on last week's game against Winona State, where she scored two goals, before having to leave the game with an injury.
"I was very excited to receive player of the week," Hall said. "There are so many talented players in the MIAA, and I feel very fortunate to be recognized as one of them. "
