College presidents agree binge drinking is the most serious problem on campus, according to the advocacy for the prevention of alcohol problems.
In a survey conducted by Harvard University's School of Public Health, at 119 colleges, it was found that 44 percent of U.S. college students engaged in binge drinking during the two weeks prior to the survey.
Fifty-one percent of the men drank five or more drinks in a sitting, whereas 40 percent of the women drank four or more drinks in one sitting.
The results of excessive drinking among college students are disturbing. More than 150,000 students develop an alcohol-related health problem, and between 1.2 and 1.5 percent indicate they tried to commit suicide within the past year due to drinking and drug use.
A litte more than 2 million students between the ages of 18 and 24 drove under the influence of alcohol during the past year.
The police reports here on campus are great examples of how alcohol plays a large role in criminal action.
According to the Harvard study, about five percent of four-year college students are involved with police or campus security as a result of their drinking.
An estimated 110,000 students between the ages 18 and 24 are arrested for an alcohol-related violation, such as public drunkenness or driving under the influence.
