Dear Editor,
Whatever happened to Thumper's golden rule from Disney's' movie Bambi: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing at all."
Or, was I the only child who caught that part in the movie?
Well, maybe not, but, it sure seemed that way when I was out for a run last Thursday.
I ran past Todd Dining Hall, right as a group of guys walked out and preceded to yell at me from across the street, "Go big girl, run that fat off!"
I immediately sped up and thought to myself, they're not talking about me, but then I heard them say, "Yeah you, big girl in the green shirt, run that fat off!"
Now my first emotion was shock, then I was appalled, and I almost cried, but I was just too enraged.
I couldn't believe the audacity of these young "college-educated" men to yell that to me, a complete stranger, who was just out minding her own business and enjoying the nice weather.
Even if I wasn't a stranger, how dare them! Now did they think that was cool or motivational? Because in my book, it was none of the above! Clearly these young men did not watch Bambi, or maybe they were out of the room when Thumper said his piece.
For all these guys know, I could have been one of the millions of women who struggle with some type of eating disorder, or have low self esteem, and their hurtful comments could have triggered a relapse.
Now I don't have either of those, but the point is these men do not know me.
Some people may say that I am over reacting. Some may think it's funny, and some may be the product of good home-training and agree with me that this was out of line.
I am definitely not the smallest woman in the world; my thighs touch, and I have a pretty good size "hump" that I am very proud of!
Where do these "boys" get off saying that?
That is just plain rude, ignorant, and shows that they have no respect for women.
These are the kind of men who make all other men look bad.
Are we not in college. Do people not have common sense anymore?
But maybe Thumper's golden rule was not clear enough for them.
I will just put it in Laments' terms for them. "Think before you speak!"
