Central Reacts to UCM

Issue date: 9/21/06 Section: News
"It sounds better. University of Central Missouri sounds better than CMSU. It sounds like a more prestigious school," said Jermaine Jones, senior.

"I think it is a great idea. With the new name, we will get more federal funding. The name sounds more upscale now that the 'state' is out of our name," said Ashley Wright, senior.

"I think it's a pointless change and is just going to confuse everyone," said Chip Dangler, student.

"I don't care either way. What's in a name? If we change anything it should be the mascot," said Dana Farr, senior.

"I think it makes us seem like a smaller school. It looks like we are trying to keep up with Missouri State in Springfield. I think CMSU sounds more professional than UCM," said Celine Porrevecchio, senior.

"I do not agree with the name change, but I still support Central because it's not about the name, but what we do that defines us," said Andre Brown, graduate student.

"Two weeks ago, I was totally against it because I thought it would increase tuition, but after I got informed I was all for it," said Devan Dignan, student.

"As long as they offer the same classes and support the students the same way, I have no problem with the name change," said Matthew Hughey, junior.

"It stinks for some students because they have a connection to the [current] name. Alumni may also feel less of a connection," said Tina Peak, senior.

"I don't care," said Ron Hill, student.

"I'm glad I didn't buy any new shirts. I think it's a nice name, compact and easier to say. It'll be similar to bigger, more popular schools who have less letters, like MU or KU," said Andrew Wurth, transfer student.

"I don't really care. It affects some of the merchandise I bought. Other than that, not really," said John Lawrence, senior.

"I think it is ridiculous, unwanted and unneeded. At least there are sales at the bookstore now."said Matt Anderson, junior.

"The name change is great; this should be a great step for the University," said David Rice, assistant provost for information technology and instruction.
