The Central Missouri Jennies volleyball team traveled to Denver Colorado this past weekend to play in the Premier Tournament. They came out of the tournament with only one 3-0 loss to undefeated Concordia University-St. Paul from Minnesota. They proceeded to win 3 straight matches against Regis (3-2), West Texas A&M (3-1), and Abilene Christian (3-1).
The Premier Tournament provided a challenge for the Jennies. With the exception of University of Nebraska-Omaha, the Jennies had no real trouble at the Central Challenge last week, while this week they were constantly being tested.
Especially by the Concordia University-St. Paul, who was ranked No. 4 in the American Volleyball Coaches Associations poll at the beginning of the season. Concordia walked over the Jennies, but they improved from each set to the next.
"We lost to Concordia-St. Paul, like we were supposed to," Assistant Coach Flip Piontek said. "But we got better each match, so we learned something. Then we beat Abilene Christian like we were supposed to." Abilene Christian came into the match ranked No. 20.
The Jennies were also challenged by Regis University Friday night after the loss to Concordia-St. Paul. Piontek explained why the Jennies had such a close match with an unranked team.
"We came out flat footed the first game against Regis after playing Concordia," Piontek said. "They weren't a ranked team so the girls thought it would be an easy match. We got out on the floor and the girls were taken at first, but we made a position change after that first game and got the match."
All the teams that were 1-1 for the tournament played each other on Saturday, pitting CMSU against West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian.
"Texas A&M is an experienced team that we knew we couldn't take lightly," Piontek said.
The Jennies took control of the match after a good effort by Texas, who had been neck and neck with Central up to that point. The Jennies played on the same court in the very next game, after a short break that allowed time for a small snack and a quick scouting session on their next team, Abilene Christian. Tired but energized from the Texas win, the Jennies powered on to get the last win of the weekend.
This win kept head coach Peggy Martin on a very good track to getting 1000 wins, something almost unheard of for any college coach of any level. Jillian Ohrman made national news as the Wilson/MIAA hitter of the week. Ohrman is a junior who transferred from the University of Mississippi this year.
The Jennies will travel to Florida this weekend for the West Florida Regional Crossover in Pensacola.
