Several graduating members of the Muleskinner staff enhanced their resumes a notch or two as the University paper won 13 awards in two journalism contests last weekend.
The Muleskinner sports staff won eight awards. Sports editor Brad Seiner, of Belton, Mo., won first place for best sports pages among large universities in the Missouri College Media Association contest. He also won third place in sports column writing.
Seiner was picked as the best sports columnist in four states - Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska - in the Society of Professional Journalists' (SPJ) regional Mark Of Excellence competition. As a first-place regional winner, he joins 12 other finalists for national awards to be announced in Chicago in August.
David Penner, former Muleskinner sports editor of Independence, Mo., won four awards from MCMA - second and honorable mention in sports column writing, third in feature writing and third in sports page design. He placed second in the SPJ contest for sports columnists.
Michael Jeffries, sports writer of Lee's Summit, received an honorable mention in feature writing in the state contest.
Muleskinner news editor Elizabeth Barnett, of Liberty, Mo., won third place for page one design. Features editor Amanda Fischer, of Sedalia, received an honorable mention for an entertainment review.
The Muleskinner, which had been named the best large university student newspaper in Missouri two years in a row, placed third in the MCMA competition and third among weekly papers in the SPJ competition.
Earlier this year, the Muleskinner won a national Gold Medal Certificate, its highest designation, from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
Hollie Mohr, of Hale, Mo., was managing editor of the paper this year.
