Track teams ready for tough meet

Central's track and field teams will cut across the state border this weekend to compete in the Emporia State Multi Events Thursday and Friday, and then compete in the Division-II Challenge Saturday in Emporia, Kan.

The meet will provide the Mules and Jennies with some of their toughest competition thus far in the outdoor season.

"It's going to be a good meet," said Kip Janvrin, co-head track and field coach. "We are going to see some of the better Division-II schools in the country. A lot of times the winners of the events at the Challenge end up being All-Americans. It's a big-time meet."

Janvrin expects the teams will be ready for the tough competition.

"Hopefully we run faster, jump higher and throw farther than we have all year," Janvrin said. "We've had some athletes out with injuries, and I'd like to get some of them feeling better for this weekend."

Due to injuries on both the men and women's teams, Central hasn't been competing at full strength the past few weeks.

The injuries caught up with the teams as the Mules placed third out of four teams last weekend in the meet at Pittsburg State University. The Jennies placed second out of four teams.

"I think the injuries really affected us last weekend," Janvrin said. "I think we are a better team than the other teams, but we need to be more consistent. I think it will all come together when it really counts."

The way the meet was scored also hurt the teams' overall grade. The teams' depth is one of their greatest strengths, but the meet rules only allowed the top two in each event to be scored. The Jennies had 26 top-five finishes, and the Mules had 24, but only a few of those counted.

Although the team placed poorly as a group, both sides had bright spots, with the Mules winning seven events and the Jennies winning six.

Bruce Williams won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash to lead the Mules.

"He did a great job," Janvrin said. "He ran really well, and he impressed me."
