The grass has turned green, the sun is shining longer and Central's outdoor track and field season is in full swing after getting off to a slow start due to bad weather.

This weekend the teams hope the weather will continue to cooperate as they travel to Pittsburg, Kan., to compete in the Pitt State Relays.

As the team's second outdoor meet of the year, co-head track and field coach Kirk Pedersen hopes the Relays will provide the Mules and Jennies with the competition they need to improve and develop.

"I think it will be important to do well in this meet," Pedersen said. "It's a quad meet, which means there will only be four total teams competing so it will be important to develop a team atmosphere. It would be nice to come away with a win."

At the first outdoor meet of the season last weekend at the Missouri Relays in Columbia the Mules and Jennies began the season in the right direction. The team finished with five national provisional performances and several place finishers against major competition.

"We did as well as can be expected, this being our first meet of the season," Pedersen said. "We had some athletes do well, and it was nice to see some provisional qualifiers as well."

Steven Edwards not only lead the Mules in place finishes but was the top Division II performer of the weekend. Edwards had two provisional throws in the hammer throw (187-06) that landed him a sixth place finish in the event. Edwards also took fifth in the discus with a throw of 169-01.

"Steve had a great indoor season, and he started the outdoor season off just the same," Pedersen said. "To see him come out and start at a high level was good to see."

Adam Akers was the fifth runner to break the tape in the 5000-meter run with a finishing time of 14:49.93.

Nicole Hasemeier was the Jennies' top finisher after taking third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a provisional time of 11:26.63. Becky Haug became the top Division-II finisher in the discus throw with a provisional throw of 147-07.
