Students who observed Central's 5th annual Scholars Symposium learned what research opportunities the campus has to offer.

"It provides students at Central an opportunity to showcase their creativity and research skills," said Patricia Decker, director of undergraduate research.

This year's symposium took place Monday through Wenesday. The events started with the keynote speaker. This year. Gary Dunbar visited to discuss his research of Huntington's Disease. Dunbar is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience and the BRAIN Center at Central Michigan University.

Dunbar has been working on his research for over 20 years and credits his students with a lot of help.

"The most fun part of doing research has been working with the students," he said.

Dunbar also spoke of the importance of research at any level during his hour-long presentation on "Research as a Critical Component of Higher Education:  Student-Centered Studies Using Stem Cell Transplants."

"Research doesn't have to be on a grand scale," Dunbar said. "You don't have to become a major research university to do great research."

He also said the smaller institutions give students more opportunities to work on research.

Dunbar said one of the best aspects of research is the student has to actively participate and learn.

"You can't teach any better than hands-on experience," he said.

"People are surprised because they don't know what's going on," Decker said. "They don't know we have students doing really fun things."

Besides the keynote speaker Monday, a poster presentation was held in the Union ballroom Tuesday. Students from all over campus put up a total of 65 posters. Decker said this is one of the more popular events.

"Attendance has really been pretty good," she said. "We have a lot of people walking through the poster show."

She said a lot of the students doing posters are psychology majors. One of those students, Callie Brockman, is no stranger to research.
