Jennies find groove, win four

The Jennies' softball team will travel to St. Joseph, Mo., this weekend to compete in the Missouri Western State University Tournament, hoping to build on the string of victories the squad has compiled lately.

The Jennies (14-8) are coming off a week that saw the squad pick up four wins in five attempts, the best run the team has had so far this season, picking up an early conference win and some revenge against a team that shocked them earlier this year.

The Jennies welcomed Pittsburg State to Warrensburg March 15, signaling the start of conference play for Central. The Gorillas won all three matches between the squads last year, but the much-improved Jennies' offense was able to stay the Gorillas in the first game to force a split in the set.

The Jennies won the first game, scoring early and often en route to a 7-2 victory. Junior Meredith Meunks continued her strong season, pitching all seven innings to improve her record to 5-1.

The Jennies' offensive attack was sparked by senior Miranda Meyer's two-run double in the first, as the Jennies plated three runs with two outs in the inning. The Jennies were able to score twice more in the second, and then added two more runs later in the game to put Pitt. State away.

The roles were reversed in the second game, as the Gorillas picked up a victory over the Jennies by the same 7-2 result.

The Gorillas hit junior pitcher Lauren Young hard, scoring all seven runs in the first two innings, dropping Young's record to 2-6 on the year.

Despite the loss, the Jennies continued their improved offense, out hitting Pitt. State 25-17 in the series, including 11-8 in the second game. Head coach Rhesa Sumrell said the Jennies were unable to get enough offensive consistency in the second game to overcome the early deficit.

"We just scattered our runners, never being able to put any hits together," Sumrell said. "I guess we just didn't believe we could score runs, we were trying too hard.
