The Jennies' softball team will travel to Emporia, Kan., Saturday to compete in the Emporia State Tournament. The squad will look to establish some consistency to what has been a turbulent start to the 2006 season.

The Jennies (10-7) spent spring break on the road, starting with a series of games in Florida, and then wrapping up in Joplin, Mo., at the Missouri Southern State University Tournament. The squad posted a 5-5 record in that span as a tale of two teams unfolded for the Jennies.

The start was the type head coach Rhesa Sumrell had hoped for.

"It's not a unique start at all," Sumrell said. "The problem I see is that until this weekend, we only had one win against an NCAA school; the rest were NAIA.

With the fun and sun of the Sunshine State setting the backdrop, the Jennies got off to a fast start in Florida, winning their first two games, 9-1 over Reinhardt College and 5-3 over Belhaven College. Despite playing NAIA competition, the Jennies looked sharp, as junior pitchers Deanna McQueen and Meredith Meunks each picked up wins in the set.

Day two proved to be a different story as the Jennies dropped two games to #6 Alabama-Huntsville 3-0 and 14-4. Junior pitcher Lauren Young continued her early season struggles, getting the loss in the first game to drop her record to 2-2. In the second game, Muenks was tagged with her first loss of the season.

The Jennies were able to salvage the set on the last day, splitting a two-game set with West Florida, a team sitting just outside the top 25, winning the first game 6-3, while falling 4-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the offense helped the combined efforts of McQueen and Meunks. Junior Rachel Adams led the charge with two hits and three RBI's. Young, who served as DH in the game, also added two hits and an RBI. Muenks was the winning pitcher of record, improving to 2-1.

The latter game was a different story as the Jennies managed only three hits and one run as Young surrendered four runs on six hits while falling to 2-3 on the season. Senior Kym Caskey led the offense with two of the squad's three hits.
