Alternative Coursework

The Senate Committee on Higher Education approved a bill, which will force instructors to offer alternate course work for students that find an assignment offends them sexually, morally or religiously.

The measure was introduced because a student complained about reading Rick Moody's "The Ice Storm." The novel contained scenes of sexuality and drug use, which bothered the student.

Faculty members at the Phoenix school said they worry the bill could take away their control of course content.

Nicholas Damask, political science professor at a Phoenix community college, said, "You couldn't have a college if students could simply veto the assignment. They could simply say, 'Give me something else to read,' and it would make my job impossible."

Email Constraints

University professors are being bombarded with emails that range from ridiculous to down right inappropriate.

One way to make professors more accessible to students has been through emailing them for advice or instruction.

More and more college faculty nationwide are adopting the sentiment that students feel they are to have around the clock accessibility.

"It's a real fine balance to accommodate what they need and at the same time maintain a level of legitimacy as an instructor and someone who is institutionally authorized to make demands on them, and not the other way round," said Michael J. Kessler, professor and assistant dean at Georgetown University.

Professors nationwide are finding it difficult to draw the line on how accessible they should be through email, given the lack of substance in some of the messages.

Business Programs Need Faculty

Schools have been in competition for students who plan to master in business administration programs at universities nationwide, but schools are now competing to find doctoral business faculty to teach the course work.

The diminishing supply of people with doctorate in business has increased demand of those with doctorates salaries through the roof. Business schools now have to devise ways to compete for doctoral faculty members and find alternatives to fill vacant postions.
