Central's track and field teams will only have to go as far as their own backyard for the competition this weekend. Central will be hosting the annual Indoor Mule Relays Friday and Saturday.

The women are scheduled to compete at 1 p.m. Friday and the men's competition will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"Friday and Saturday will be a big meet, and we are going to see a lot of good competition," said Kip Janvrin co-head track and field coach. "It will be very good if we can win an event. I think more than anything, it will be a chance for a lot of our kids to show us where they belong on this team and that they are ready to compete in our conference championships."

Janvrin also indicated the home track meet might be an advantage for the Mules and Jennies.

"It will be nice for our kids to sleep in their own bed and race on their own track," Janvrin said. "More than anything, it will be good for our kids to gain some experience and maybe improve on some things."

Improvement is exactly what the teams hoped to achieve last week when they competed in the Radio Shack Invitational in Joplin, Mo.

"It was a glorified training meet," Janvrin said. "We wanted to make progress and we did."

The teams came away from the invitational doing more than improving. The Mules and Jennies combined to win seven events.

The team was again led by Steven Edwards who earned a first place finish in the men's weight throw. The win helped earn Edwards the MIAA men's field athlete of the week for the second week in a row.

"The weight throws have been going really well," Edwards said. "I'm ahead of where I was last year. I feel stronger and more athletic this year.

"The MIAA is no slouch, so it's a pretty big honor to be named athlete of the week for two straight weeks. It's been a real surprise, especially since this conference is so strong."

The Mules' 4 x 400 meter relay team won the event with a time of 3:22.26. Kyle Brown also won the 400-meter dash for the Mules.

The Jennies enjoyed team success as they won the women's distance medley and recorded a new meet record with a time of 12:01.28.

Several individuals won events including Jennifer Drum-Greer in the high jump, Erin Hasemeier in the one-mile run and Elise Johnson in the 60-meter dash.

After only three weeks of competition, both the men and women's track and field teams are enjoying a lot of success.

"I think this is a special year," Edwards said. "We are all really focusing on the MIAA Conference title. Both [the men and women's teams] look really strong."

Janvrin agrees this year's team is very talented.

"I like our team a lot," Janvrin said. "We've got a lot of talented kids, but we need to stay focused and keep going with what we need to do and that's win a conference title."
