No longer will academic facilities bear the names of past scholars and personal contributors.
Several large universities have contracted the help of large corporations, such as PepsiCo and Movie Gallery for funds toward campus renovation.
Experts are not surprised by the these business collaborations which are commonly used by major league sporting teams.
By looking to these multi-million dollar companies for funding, universities do not have to put the burden of funding on their student body through increased tuition.
In 2003, Troy University contracted Movie Gallery to upgrade their football stadium.
The project cost an estimated $5 million all granted by Movie Gallery. The university agreed to a 20-year commitment to the rental chain and to renaming the facility Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium in recognition of their contribution.
Troy continued to generate funds from Movie Gallery after the renovation which allowed them to contribute to academics and other athletic programs.
With higher education funding on the decline, other universities have considered taking advantage of the opportunity to work with these corporations in the future.
The facilities that receive contributions must promote or advertise the contributing corporation's logo or trademark.
This could possibly change the appearance of college directories, giving them a close resemblance to a grocery list.
