Central's track and field team came away from Iowa last weekend the winners of five events. The wins came against some of the best Division II track and field schools in the nation and even a few Division I schools.

"It surprised me a little bit," said Kirk Pedersen, co-head track and field coach. "It went very well, and I'm very pleased with where we are at."

Not only did five different athletes win events, but also Kristen Anderson and Imani Butler qualified for the national tournament with their wins. This achievement comes only two weeks into the track and field season.

Butler said his national qualifying time of 21.04 seconds in the 200-meter dash removes some of the pressure off of him for the remainder of the season.

"Now I can just concentrate on technique and focus on doing what I need to do to get better," Butler said

It will be a challenge for Butler to be better than what he has been in his first two competitions of the season. After two weeks, Butler has broken the school record in the 60 meter dash and the 200 meter dash and currently holds the fastest time in the 200 meter dash in Division II this season.

"I've been running good times, but I have a lot of stuff to improve on," Butler said. "I'm nowhere near where I can be. [Last weekend], I actually hurt my hamstring while I was racing, and I wasn't going full speed. We'll see what happens when I'm healthy."

Kristin Anderson, who took first place in the 5000-meter race with a time of 16:49.29 minutes, also qualified for nationals. She beat the next closest competition by almost 30 seconds.

"We've had some people prepare well so far this season, and Kristin Anderson is one of them," Pedersen said. "She was one of the highlights [last weekend]."

The wins by Anderson and Butler earned them the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for track events.

Adam Akers won the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:30.06 minutes, good enough to set a school record.
