Central's track and field teams are in for a big challenge. The teams will face several Division-I and top Division-II teams at the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa Friday and Saturday.

However, the teams have prepared well and this weekend will prove just how well they stacks up against some of the best competition. The coaches and athletes realize doing well at this competition would speak volumes about this teams' talent.

"If one of our kids wins an event, your looking at a potential All-American," said co-head track and field coach Kip Janvrin. "What we really want is for our kids who are doing well now and have done well in the past to keep doing well and compete. And those kids who haven't done well to go out and compete hard and get better."

Competing hard is what the Mules and Jennies proved they could do last weekend at the CMSU Invitational.

Central's track and field teams won both the men and women's divisions of the competition and had several athletes win their events.

"It's obviously good to win," Janvrin said. "It really wasn't our goal to win, it was our goal to compete hard and get better. It was a chance to see what we need to improve on and what we are doing well."

Not only did the teams win, they won by a landslide. The Mules and Jennies won a combinded 14 events.

"We won by a lot," Janvrin said, "but we've got to get better. We did well as a team, but we've got to improve if we want to continue to win."

Among Central's winners was Imani Butler who not only won his event, but also broke the school record in the 60-meter dash running it in 6.73 seconds.

"Imani is phenomenally fast," Janvrin said. "He has the potential to be the best sprinter in Division-II."

Kristin Anderson also was a big winner over the weekend, taking both the 3000-meter race and the one-mile run.

"She's picked up where she left off last year," Janvrin said. "She's the best distance runner in the conference."

Also winning two events at the Invitational was Steven Edwards, who won both the shot put and the weight throw.

"Steven is our top thrower," Janvrin said. "He did well and started his year off well. He's one of our leaders."

Lori Pitz also won two events, taking the 60-meter hurdles and the 600-yard run.

Pitz and Bulter were chosen as the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the week for their performance in the CMSU Invitational.

"Overall, this meet was good to reaffirm the kids that we could potentially have a good team this year if we continue to work," Janvrin said. "We've got several All-Americans on this team that I think have improved over last year."
