Central's associate provost, Elaine Frank-Ragan, took a leave of absence from the University for the spring 2006 semester. Dr. Mike Grelle, director of Testing Services and Assessment, is filling in for her as he did previously in summer 2005.
"The fact that it's my second time makes it easier," Grelle said. "We knew it was coming."
George Wilson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, had little time to fill the position. He said Grelle was the obvious choice given the circumstances.
"There was not anyone else able to step in with the level of knowledge Mike had," Wilson said. "He's really the only person realistically able to take the job on such short notice."
Wilson noted there were other factors involved as well.
"The position involves working with all academic programs on campus and external agencies that influence academic affairs," Wilson said. "[Grelle] was involved with a lot of the same people in and out of the University. He reported to the associate provost."
"The assessment part of my job deals with student learning and curriculum - academic affairs," Grelle said. "I've been doing it for 14 years. I worked with all the deans and chairs, and that helps a lot."
As director of Testing Services and Assessment, it was Grelle's responsibility to oversee the Higher Learning Commission visit last semester along with Frank-Ragan.
"We chaired the Accreditation Self-Study for the Higher Learning Commission," Grelle said.
Along with his duties as the Associate Provost, Grelle will still hold his position in Testing Services.
"He is the hardest working person at the University," saidDonna Roberts, research assistant for Institutional Research. "He did it last fall and still taught two classes."
"There are a number of new degree programs and possibilities in various stages of production in place. Student issues are the most interesting and challenging to me," Grelle said.
