The Jennies' bowling team will host the Central Region NCAA Duals at noon Friday, hoping to continue building on what has been an uncharacteristically slow start to the 2006 portion of the schedule.
The Jennies returned to action last Thursday, posting a tie against Arkansas State University in Little Rock, Ark. The Jennies bowled in an atypical fashion, having to come back and steal a win in the second game after falling behind Arkansas State in the opening match.
"The first sequence of events always concerns me," said Jennies' head coach Ron Holmes. "Sometimes it's tough getting back into the flow at the start of the semester. They beat us pretty handily the first match, but we were able to battle back and win the second game.
After dropping the regular team match 991-922, the Jennies picked up a 4-3 victory in the Baker format, which consists of each bowler rolling two frames, making the margin for error smaller. The Jennies were able to use their talent advantage to close out the match.
As the Jennies were attempting to regain their early season form, the squad traveled to Baton Rouge, La., over the weekend to compete in the Southern University Duals.
The Jennies had one last pit stop before the tournament, defeating Jackson (Miss.) State on Friday 936-753. The Jennies were led in scoring by senior Sara Cox with an average of 207. Right behind her was freshman Allison Gerding with 203.
This appeared to be a good indicator of how the Jennies' weekend would go heading into the Southern University tournament.
The rust was still showing for the Jennies, as the national runner-up from a season ago found themselves in fifth place at the end of day one. Holmes said the players were not focusing as a team the first day, which led to the drop-off.
"The tournament was two completely different types of days for us," Holmes said. "The first day was very uncharacteristic of a CMSU team. We lacked rhythm and communication between the players.
