Central's wrestling team will be heading north this weekend to compete in the Wartburg College Invitational in Waverly, Iowa with the first match getting underway at 9 a.m.
The match will feature several top Division III schools and will provide the wrestlers with a good measuring stick for where they are as a team this far into the season.
"It's going to be a tough tournament," said head wrestling coach Robin Ersland. "We'll be facing the top one or two teams in Division III and some of the better teams in the country."
"We are expecting to do well and win, but what I really want is to see us continue to improve and get stronger," Ersland said.
Senior All-American wrestler Mike Hansen is confident his team will be ready for the competition.
"I expect all of our people to place," Hansen said. "I think we're going to come out strong and I think we are going to place well."
Ersland said, the team has continued to get better in every tournament it has competed in thus far.
The high level of wrestling was evident last Thursday when the team shutout the Bacone College Warriors of Oklahoma 50-0.
"Everybody was aggressive," Ersland said. "We wrestled hard every match and we wore them out. I was very pleased with everybody."
The Mules had 10 wrestlers who competed that night and all 10 of them came away victorious.
"I thought we did a great job," Hansen said. "Everybody who wrestled did a great job and so did the coaches."
Chad Collins, who was competing in his first varsity match of the season, received praise from his head coach.
"If anybody stood out it was Chad Collins," Ersland said. "He did a really great job."
Collins won his match by fall in 5:58.
"I felt pretty good," Collins said. "I was excited to wrestle like that. I think you have to go in there expecting to win, but the team did a great job winning it like we did."
The team has wrestled better in the last few tournaments. Coach Ersland is pleased with the progress his team is making to better themselves with each upcoming match.
"Our goal is to get a little better every time and I think we have been doing that," Ersland said. "I think we are much better than where we were at the beginning of the season. We've grown a lot and I think we are much stronger."
Hansen also said the team is better than what it was at the beginning of the year.
"I definitely believe we are wrestling better," Hansen said. "I think we are even wrestling better than we did last year. I think everybody is very focused right now."
