The No. 19 Jennies' basketball team will travel to Topeka, Kan., Saturday, opening conference play against No. 1 Washburn. The Jennies hope their early season success will translate into a victory against the top team in the nation.
The Jennies (5-1) picked up their latest victory of the season Nov. 30 in a 91-38 home win over Lincoln University at the Multi. This game was the second of the year against Lincoln, with the Jennies outscoring the Blue Tigers by a count of 176-71 in the two games.
Head coach Dave Slifer said that the win was expected. "It was a game in which we were coming off a loss," Slifer said. "We knew it wasn't going to be much of a challenge."
The Jennies outplayed Lincoln in all facets of the game, out rebounding the Blue Tigers 52-27, while forcing 25 turnovers. The Jennies shot a season best 45.5 percent from three-point range, while Lincoln only shot 22.7 percent from the floor.
Slifer said one of the elements the team has been working on is its half court defense, but after a slow start to the game, he decided to put on the press.
"We wanted to try to stay in the half-court set defensively," Slifer said. "But when the score was 6-4 we decided to turn on the press so the crowd didn't fall asleep."
The Jennies were led in scoring by junior guard Meagan Fromm's 16 points. This included three of four shooting from behind the arc. Junior forward Cydney Franklin recorded her first double double as a Jennie, scoring 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
Senior center Melissa Richardson continued her strong play on the boards, grabbing a season-high 12 rebounds. Junior point guard Ashley Milliham, who has been setting the table all season, averaging three assists to every turnover, bettered that total with six assists and only one turnover in the victory.
The Jennies hosted Harris-Stowe Wednesday night, but results were unavailable at time of publication. The Jennies victory over Lincoln was the largest in school history, with the prior being a 105-38 victory over Harris Stowe in 1996.
