The Jennies' bowling team will travel to St. Louis on Thanksgiving to battle with Louisiana Tech University, hoping to build on the team's fast start to the young season.
The Jennies were in Mankato, Minn., last weekend competing in the Minnesota St. University-Mankato duals. Hopes were high for the squad after coming off a first-place finish in Arkansas to open the season.
The squad did not disappoint, finishing in second place behind the University of Nebraska, last year's national champion. Head coach Ron Holmes said he was pleased with the performance of his team.
"Overall we were pretty successful," Holmes said. "We knew we would be seeing several of the top teams in the region, and I was very happy with the results."
The Jennies posted a record of 4-2 in the tournament losing to Vanderbilt on Saturday and Nebraska on Sunday. Junior Tina Peak said the losses rest squarely on the shoulders of the team.
"Part of it would be us not playing to our potential," Peak said. "We had some bad shots and errors at key moments against both teams."
The Jennies did compile four victories over the weekend winning three matches on Saturday and one on Sunday. Sophomore Bryanna Caldwell said the tournament was a lot different from the first one of the season.
"We didn't have to be as aggressive in the last tournament," Caldwell said. "We had a few problems that we shouldn't have had with our experience."
Caldwell was crowned tournament MVP with an overall average of 234.6, which was the best in the field. She also achieved the first 300 game in her career during the loss to Nebraska.
"I was surprised to learn that it was her first one," Holmes said. "She is a very consistent and solid player; it was nice to see her finish like that."
"My nerves were a little out of control," Caldwell said. "I tried to control it. Once I get the ball in my hands, I don't feel the pressure."
The Jennies had two other players finish in the top ten, with sophomore Jiovanna Bruce finishing sixth with a 208, and junior Kim Wirth, ninth with an average of 198.7.
