Wrestling season officially got underway this week for the Mules who are ranked 17th in the nation in NCAA Division II.
Head wrestling coach Robin Ersland has high expectations for his team this season, and is excited about the start of a new year.
"I think we've got a good young team," Ersland said. "I expect us to do well at the national level and the local level."
A good young team is exactly what Ersland has assembled. Seven sophomore wrestlers have been named to the starting lineup and Ersland expects the young group to perform well.
Ersland said the sophomores will make the team one to watch, but each wrestler will have to work to get to the level they need to be.
"They could be just as good [as past teams]," Ersland said. "The end of the year will tell all of that. I think they have the potential to be that good, though."
Ersland signed 18 new wrestlers to the team during the off-season, which will provide good depth to an already solid starting lineup.
Wade Killgore, who placed 7th in the 141 pound weight class at the NCAA-II Championship last spring, said he knows the team can meet and exceed expectations for this season.
"I know we can place in the top 10," Killgore said. "I think we can achieve that very easily and be regional champs."
Kilgore added that his personal goal was to be the individual national champion in his weight class this season.
Along with the new, young talent, the Mules added three new coaches to their staff: Bobbe Lowe, Kevin Stanley and Alan Hull.
"All three of these guys have a wealth of knowledge and experience in wrestling," said Ersland on cmsu.edu. "I feel very good about our staff for [this] year.
"The [wrestlers] we have returning and the newcomers we're bringing in are going to have the opportunity to learn from some quality coaches."
