It all came down to this. The chance for a championship was at stake, and every last play was picked apart with a fine tooth and comb. Players dream of the opportunity to be the best. And for one moment, they are. When that moment comes, all the hard work is worth it.

That moment culminated at the South Recreation Complex Friday night. The Jennies' soccer team battled for its season life against Missouri Southern.

The game went into the first of two, 10-minute overtimes. Neither team scored, sending the match onward.

Stepping up

Hazel Cox scored the game-winning, overtime goal against Truman State Oct. 29. The team looked for her to step up again.

Cox got the ball on the right of the box and took the shot. The went up and over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper, giving Central the 2-1 victory.

"I've never met a player as goal hungry as she is," said Jennies' senior Alicia Givens. "She can find the back of the net without looking. She's just goal hungry, and we need that. We've needed it for a long time."

Late in the second half, the chances looked slim for the Jennies. But just when Missouri Southern thought its 1-0 lead would hold up, the Jennies had other ideas.

The Jennies, who had kept the offensive pressure on the Lions the entire second half, again looked to Cox.

Cox, a freshman, came into the game leading the team in goals with 10. However she wasn't about to let her season end without adding to the total.

From just in front of the box, Cox made a move and sneaked past Southern's goalkeeper, and tapped the shot into the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.

"Those are two huge goals," said Jennies' head coach Geoff VanDeusen. "She's a big time player for us.

"She couldn't have done it without a great team behind her."

With the two goals, Cox was named the Brine/MIAA Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
