The Jennies were able to rebound from a heartbreaking loss to No. 7 Washburn by defeating Emporia State 3-0 on the road last Thursday. The victory solidified the number three seed in the MIAA tournament and more importantly, got the Jennies back to their winning ways.
'D' it up
The Jennies usual offensive attack was silenced by the Hornets, so the team had to win with solid defense, something Assistant Coach Flip Piontek said was crucial.
"The game was not the prettiest offensively," Piontek said. "What they did hindered us offensively. We were able to keep enough balls in play to hurt them offensively. It was very important to win a match like that."
It was the Jennies ability to counter Emporia State all night that gave them the edge. Despite the Jennies hitting .160, it pales in comparison to Emporia's .054.
The Jennies were led offensively by sophomore Andrea Robertson's 12 kills, while freshman Brooke Butler added 11. Senior Becky Haug continued her strong play with 10 kills, one solo block and four block assists. Senior Kaci Young racked up 54 assists and sophomores Audrey Jensen and Ashlei Jandrey chipped in with 15 digs each.
Big win
With the MIAA portion of the regular season behind them, the Jennies looked to climb another obstacle which has hindered them all season; beating a ranked opponent. They traveled to Kansas City to face Rockhurst University Saturday.
The Jennies were just 4-6 in games against ranked competition this season, but were able to pick up their 15th win in their last 17 chances, blanking Rockhurst 3-0.
The match itself was hard fought, with both teams slugging it out for the three-game match. Pointek said that the win came at the right time for the club.
"It was a very gratifying win," Piontek said. "We hit just well enough to win the match. This was the kind of situation that our players needed to play in."
