First tie tough for Central to take

Jennies' soccer will end its regular season at 6 p.m. Friday night at the South Recreation Complex when it faces the Missouri Southern State Lions.

It will be an important game for the Jennies and their hopes to get a share of the conference championship. But the Lions are a team that will be difficult to beat.

Central and Southern are tied for second in the MIAA with 22 points; three points behind Washburn. If the pieces fall into place for the Jennies, they could find themselves with a share of the crown.

In order for the Jennies to accomplish their goal, they will have to beat Southern and will look for Truman State, who has 21 points, to lose at least one of their two remaining games.

Jennies' head coach Geoff VanDeusen said the game will be emotional for the team because it will be the last game for its seniors. He wants the Jennies to go out and give them a win to end their career.

"We're going to honor our seniors and hopefully we send them out with a win," VanDeusen said. "We want to end the season on a win."

Roller coaster ride

The Jennies have had trouble with inconsistency throughout the last part of the season. They haven't won back-to-back games since they beat Southwest Oklahoma Oct. 2 and Emporia State Oct. 7.

Central gained a tough 1-0 overtime win against Truman Saturday. Hazel Cox scored her 10th goal of the season to give the Jennies the victory. With her solid play, Cox was named the Brine/MIAA Player of the Week.

"Hazel's job is to score goals," VanDeusen said. "She's working at that. She's a dangerous player for us."

With the win, the Jennies found themselves in control of their own destiny. They just needed to win out to win the conference. VanDeusen said to have the win come against a team like Truman was great.

"That was a step in the right direction," VanDeusen said. "Psychologically, it was a big thing for us to beat them."

But the Jennies were unable to take control of the conference Tuesday afternoon in Maryville, Mo., against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.
